Rihanna: New Fashion Icon

Rihanna has been an icon in the music industry for quite a while…but FASHION?

The Council of Fashion Designers of America will be recognizing Rihanna with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award at an annual ceremony held on June 2nd in New York. Personas previously awarded with this prize include Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, and Nicole Kidman.

The 26-year-old  singer has been recognized worldwide for her numerous musical hits, debuting at a young age in the island of Barbados. But who knew her popularity would spread and hit the fashion industry so powerfully? Her style has been and is currently being described as highly controversial, expressed through her sensual…or should I say sexual? and provocative music videos as well as through her risque street style ensembles.

What is happening in the Fashion Industry? Is this a desperate call for attention? There are many trendy bloggers, actresses, socialites, AND singers out there…but why chose to praise a woman who promotes values attached to sex, drugs, and an overall unhealthy lifestyle in a world who’s celebrities act as important role models in diverse areas of life, not only to teenagers but also young adults?

Below are a few of her recent looks posted on her Instagram account:

I feel that fashion Icons should be chosen for their originality, influence, but also their tastefulness and charm.

Am I the only person who feels Rihanna is completely inadequate? …
