Yiqing Yin’s Magic

Every now and again, I’ll come across someone so inspiring that the discovery breathes life into me. It doesn’t happen as often as I want it to, but when it strikes, it’s magic.

I’m happy to say that magic struck recently. Last week, I came across the work of the enchanting Yiqing Yin, and I was spellbound. A sculptural couturier, Yin molds fabric into masterpieces. As she describes, her method of creation is “intuitive, a sensory wandering, and the search for voluntary accidents”. It is this unique approach of visceral construction that separates Yin from others, and has earned her an invitation from the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne.

Leaving her native China at the age of four, Yin was raised and educated in France. She is an acclaimed designer with awards such as the Prix de Premieres Collections at the 2011 ANDAM awards, honoring French designers.

Though Yin is an accomplished designer, it is not her awards that inspire me, but her confident articulation of who she is. As one can see in her recent video collaboration with the Absolut brand, she is mesmerizing. There is a strength about her that is quiet, yet potent. She strikes me as a woman aware of her power, and knows how and when to wield it. She is unafraid of change or challenge.

“It’s important for my creativity to always be confronted, because that’s where transformation is possible. When you take the step to meet the end, you have to be believe in yourself and always challenge convention. Never get comfortable. That’s the real magic in transformation.” – Yiqing Yin

It is with great delight then, that Yin has most recently been named the Creative Head at French fashion house Leonard Paris. Yin will be replacing Raffaele Borrielo, and will continue to build her own label during her tenure at Leonard.

I don’t know about you, but I am excited at the transformation that Yin will inevitably bring to Leonard. I have a feeling her vision will be transcendental. By all means, let the magic begin.
