Platinum Hits and Misses at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Award shows always draw a lot of attention. Many people tune in for the performances, celebrities or the actual awards, for me it’s the red carpet. At this year’s 56th Grammy Awards, some stars shined, literally, they shined, while other’s looks fizzled fast.

The trend of the night appeared to sparkle, shimmer and shine. From Madonna’s gold “grill” to Taylor Swift’s glowing Gucci gown, it seemed most looks were hard to miss. Chrissy Teigan and Amber Rose were among those that glittered.

However, I think the old adage goes, “all that glitters is not gold.” This saying couldn’t be more true for Rita Ora in Lanvin. I thought the long sleeved metallic dress, not only made her look like she was wrapped in foil, but would have been more flattering if shortened or lengthened a few inches either way.

It was Ciara’s gold beaded Pucci gown stole the show. The long-sleeved dress made pregnancy look so good on her; she radiated from the inside out. Taylor Swift wasn’t far behind in a chainmail gown by Gucci that hugged every part of her body perfectly. These were arguably the best looks of the night.

Even though the red carpet was predominantly metallic, celebs also rocked whimsical, girly dresses in muted pallets of grey, nude, pink and white. It wasn’t surprising that Katy Perry, who has a typically fun and quirky style, went for the flowing “musical note” gown from Valentino’s 2014 haute couture collection. Other stars that went for the neutral look were Anna Kendrick in a grey Azzaro dress, Kacey Musgraves in a princess-like Armani Privé look and Skylar Grey in a nude Michael Costello gown.

While Grey and Musgraves wore nude dresses that matched their skin tone, causing them to be completely washed out, they weren’t as bad as those of Kathy Griffin, Natasha Bedingfield and Paula Patton. It wouldn’t be an award show fashion recap without an ultimate worst dressed of the night. If you didn’t know her, now you do. I give you Nadeea Volianova…
